Aggregate 2 Complete (phew!)

Well we finally were able to run aggregate 2 for 2009! With a number of attempts under our belt, there was abit of pressure to ‘just get it done’ on Saturday 6th June. The contest directors hit the beach very early on Saturday morning to assess conditions and make a call. A very very small swell was presented with a forecast of ‘getting smaller’ as the day goes on. Not to be intimidated, Rowan made the call to run and we were away.

With small conditions and calm winds, a reasonable amount of open competitors had planned road trips in search of waves - and with the long weekend a number of competitors were enjoying the long weekend away. That said, around 100 members registered and competed. And (surprisingly) the waves hung in there for most of the day. All heats and finals recorded plenty of waves ridden - they may not have been sizy but they were clean and straight and certainly contestable.

All results are available via the Season 2009 link (top right of screen) but to summarise, Johnno Spitiri took out the Open Mens with Laura Spencer making it 2 in a row in the open womens. Fantastic work Johnno for your maiden open win!

Presentations were held at the TBC clubhouse (Jan Juc Cricket Club) where club members devoured a heap of pizza and had a few beers, wines and softdrinks.

Remember, next Saturday June 13 we are hoping to run aggregate 3 - so whack it in your diary as we hope to do it all again next week.

FINALLY, THE CORRECT DATES!!!

May 20, 2009 at 4:24 am

OK, these are the dates until our winter break - there has been some confusion over dates and if you checked the website between 10am and 7pm on Tuesday June 2nd you would have seen incorrect dates. The below ones are what we are running with. We have been granted permits (as of the afternoon of Tuesday 2nd June) for both of the below dates, so we are good to go. All’s we need now is Huey to cooperate and send us some waves.

Aggregate 2: Saturday 6th June

Aggregate 3: Saturday 13th June

For the rest of the outstanding aggregates the TBC committee will have to sit down and plan out what weekends are free for us to use after the winter break. We’ve temporarily pushed aggs 4 and 5 to the dates that were scheduled for aggs 5 and 6 - but these dates will need to be confirmed. Things get really tight after the winter break with alot of other events occurring so we could be pushed to surf later this year than normal. As always, we’ll keep you posted via email, SMS and our website.

See you all on Saturday the 6th June.

Committee Meeting for 30 April has been cancelled.

April 29, 2009 at 9:48 am

Just in case any non-committee members were planning on attending the TBC committee meeting at the Jan Juc Cricket Club on the evening of the 30th April - this meeting has been cancelled. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Don’t forget - due to the cancellation of Aggregate 2 on the 25th April, this aggregate will now be surfed (hopefully!) on May 9th.

See you all then

Surfboard Raffle Winner is Michelle!

April 20, 2009 at 8:41 am

Michelle_RaffleWinnerAt the most recent TBC committee meeting (held on 16th April) we drew the raffle of our Rip Curl Pro surfboard. And the winner was Michelle (check the photo!) who is now the proud owner of a retro twinny signed by a heap of pro surfers. Michelle was super stoked, and although she does not currently surf, she now plans to take it up. What better craft to begin on than a hotdogging bright yellow retro twin-fin.

A big thanks to Ross Slaven and Russell Graham for donating their time and effort in shaping and glassing the board. Cheers guys.

And also a big thanks to Rowan who organises it all and to all the ticket sellers who manned the station down at the event, especially Bucks who took ticket selling and general TBC public relations to a whole new level.

We managed to raise a few dollars for the club that will now be invested back in for all members benefit. Its these efforts by members that make all the difference to the TBC.

Congratulations Adam!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 10 or so days, you would know that TBC member Adam Robertson has put in the performance of his career to come runner-up at the Rip Curl Pro 2009. From winning his way into a wildcard spot via the trials, Adam rocketed his way through some major scalps to take a position in the final. In starting order Adam took out Chris Davidson, Bede Durbidge, Tom Whitaker, Kekoa Bacalso and Freddy Patacchia with only a massively inform Joel Parkinson stopping his giant killing run. No doubt the entire surfing community of Victoria, and especially the lads down in Portland, are stoked with his performance. I think we all had a few beers last night to toast his incredible effort.

What a way to kick off the year and TBC wishes Adam all the best for the rest of the WQS season.

Surf with the Stars

On Sunday the 5th of April a ‘Surf with the Stars’ event was held at the Rip Curl Pro. Put on by ‘World Professional Surfers’ (see www.worldprosurfers.com) in conjunction with Torquay Boardriders Club, MSF, RCP Board of Management and Surfing Victoria, a heap of TBC grommets (as well as grommets from other Victorian clubs) got to surf with some of their pro surfing heroes. For about 1.5 hours these grommets surfed the Bells Bowl, sharing waves with touring professional surfers who offered tips and encouragement. You couldn’t wipe the smile off every grommets face.

Check out the photos from the day in the Photo Gallery.

2009 Aggregate 1 - Complete!

March 22, 2009 at 7:51 am

2009_agg1

What a way to start off the 2009 season - a very warm (actually, pretty hot) day and a fun and straight 2 ft(or so) swell running. Some of the older members may have hoped for a little bit more size in the waves department, but a great size for grommets and with the success of last weeks Grommet Development Day the kids were frothing all over it. We double banked for most of the morning to get through heats and then most of the focus for the rest of the day was on the famous car-park righthander. Heats were run solid all day, retro boards were dusted off (for some competitors) and we closed off the day with finals being surfed late in the afternoon as the tide filled back in. Offshore winds fanned us all day, and although the swell was a tad lazy, it was certainly enough to keep all divisions competitive.

After a long day at the beach we all headed back to our new ‘clubhouse’ at Jan Juc Cricket Club. The facilities down at the cricket club are incredible and we are so stoked to able to share them - a massive thanks to the Jan Juc Cricket Club from the TBC Committee and members.

Congrats to all competitors and winners on the day. A massive day and a great way to start the 2009 season. Yew!

All results have been posted and some photos are also up in the Photo Gallery - check’em out.

Aggregate 1 - Saturday 21st March 2009

March 18, 2009 at 8:45 am

Just a friendly reminder to all members that this Saturday (21st March 2009) we will be running Aggregate 1 for 2009. The first aggregate of the year is always run as the ‘Wilbur Memorial’ in memory of Mark ‘Wilbur’ Wilde. This year we are also using the day to raise some money for the bushfire appeal. A Red Cross bushfire tin will be on hand during the day to allow for any donations you may wish to make. We understand that many have already donated, this is simply Torquay Boardriders acknowledging the tragedy and attempting to raise a few dollars to help out.

Aggregate details are the usual - meet at Jan Juc car park at 7:30am. In an attempt to ‘get the ball rolling’ sooner this year, we are endeavoring to make a call on whether we surf or not by 7:30am. Therefore we can get heats organised and in the water sooner to take advantage of conditions. Don’t be late eh?

See you all there. Saturdays looking like a warm one so spread the suncream.

Want to find out about what it’s like to surf in competitions?

Torquay Boardriders Club are running a fun morning on the 15th March 2009 for boys and girls aged 10 – 13 at Jan Juc beach. Learn about the basics of surfing in competitions and surf in some practice heats with your friends. Grab ya board, wetty and a friend and hit the beach. Meet at 10.00am at the viewing platform at Jan Juc. The session is planned to be run between 10am and 1pm. Based on the conditions, we should run it at Jan Juc, but if the swell is too large we will possibly move it to Torquay - meet at Jan Juc at 10am nonetheless. Your in good hands as accredited surfing coaches and senior members of the club will be on hand to run the morning.

See you all there.

SPARE WETSUITS

March 4, 2009 at 7:43 am

You might remember a post back a few weeks ago looking for volunteers for The Disabled Surfers Association. Hopefully some of you got along to Ocean Grove on the day and got involved. This Saturday they are holding their first event and are looking for donations of old wetsuits (or new ones if your feeling super generous!). If you have an old wettie gathering dust in the shed that is still OK, it would be really appreciated if you could drop it off at Sui Hawkens place prior to this weekend. His address is as follows:

18 Empire Ave
Jan Juc

Thanks to all who can donate.
